Happy Birthday 27!

Today's the 27th running of the LA Marathon and the third time it ends the race right here in Santa Monica. The longest yoga mat in the city - 26.2 miles where tens of thousands of runners come together and pave out their path as one - YOGA.
I love it and you can't help but feel it in the air - the excitement and camaraderie.
Whether it's a runner's first time or 101st time, it's always exciting because the support and preparation meet.
The love is abundant from family members, friends and strangers cheering runners on and warming them with hugs at the end of the race.
Today is yoga and we get to meet on the mat and do our yoga.

Running, like yoga, can be very self competitive. You may see the person beside you, pass you, or beside you achieve a posture that you are struggling with, but ultimately, it is you, up against yourself WITH others who are up against themselves.

It’s not really about the full expression of a posture or passing someone on the road, it’s about coming together to accomplish something for yourself. When you accomplish something for yourself, you are able to, in turn, help others accomplish.

It’s impossible not to think that every mile we train or every pose we put our bodies into has a result outside of ourselves. Every time we tie our laces or take a deep breath in and set our intention to practice, we are creating an energy that is pure and good for ourselves and those we come in contact with.

Life is often compared to a marathon. It’s a process of transformation. It isn’t destination. It’s not even journey. Its who you become after you prepare. It’s time and preparation. It’s the building of endurance and the knocking down of walls of fear that afford you and opportunity that is created solely by you. Yes there is a date, a deadline, but YOU have created that opportunity with your one still point focus and intention. YOGA.

Our yoga practice is like a marathon. Sometimes you are in the zone. Sometimes you need to rest. Sometimes you wonder what the heck got you into this. But you are always glad you did it.You are always glad to try your best.

It might not be 26.219 miles, but it is always a lesson in training for the great marathon of life.

What do you run for? What is your race? What is your goal?

The key ingredients are time and preparation of not only the mind but the body and spirit. You have to believe you can do it for the rest to follow. Endurance is a result of that effort.

And, anyone can do it, regardless of age, size or physical limitation. The only thing you need is to believe.

It’s commitment and follow through, accountability and responsibility. It’s accomplishment and celebration.

Let us use the words of great runners and leaders to inspire us on our course today.

Frisbeeeeeee

On January 23rd, 1957, the Wham-O toy company rolled out the first batch of their aerodynamic plastic discs known around the world as the Frisbee!
William Frisbee opened the Frisbie Pie Company in 1871 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. College kids would throw their empty pie tins at each other yelling, Frisbeeeee as they let go.
The definition of levity is lightness or buoyancy.

Like the Frisbee that coasts lightly through the air and connects the hand of one to the hand of another, find the levity in the connection with yourself and those around you as you come to mat and practice yoga.
Enjoy the silliness of some of the poses, the glide of your limbs as they create shape and holding of a posture that is rooted in the camaraderie of connection.
It is, after all, just yoga. And yoga is designed to move the body to a place of stillness.
Frisbees are meant to soar until they are reached.
Yup, I can even find yoga in the frisbee.
You can find yoga in everything and it takes looking at our history, our actions and interactions to find the bliss and balance in it all.
Have fun and breathe deeply,
Lady

Grand Canyon 1/11/12

Darlings,
Happy 1/11/11...did you make a wish at 1:11? Did you miss it at the AM? Well you had the PM!! Make a wish now on 1 and celebrate.

In Lady Yoga fashion, it is my goal to look back in history to see where we have come from, find the yoga in the moments past to keep us rooted in the present and passionate about where we are going in the future.
On that note...

On January 11th, 1908 President Roosevelt declared the Grand Canyon a National Monument stating, “Let this great wonder of nature remain as it is. You cannot improve upon it…but keep it for your children, your children’s children and all who come after you.”

More than 5 million people visit this pocket of earth that has virtually unchanged for 400 years. (80K acres, 7K above sea level)

Immovable, strong and marvelous - it stays virtually the same no matter what the weather or how many people walk all over it.

As individuals, we ARE movable. But we’re strong and stable in our foundation and determination in practice - staying balanced no matter what weather, people and challenges come into our life.

Observe and ride the peaks and valleys of this practice like the ebbs and flow of life. Let the breath serve you in and out as you move and hold postures.

The wind at the Grand Canyon is magnificent and it's mobile force supports the ground it fills and flows throughout.

Enjoy the playfulness as you explore the stillness between the movements, holding and letting go. Compression postures to detoxify, heat to let go, standing postures to strengthen, breathing to stay true to your intention and stretches to open up. Savor it all and stay steady.

“Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. It is far better take things as they come along with patience and equanimity. – Carl Jung

Just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals, and values are in balance. –Brian Tracy

“Let the wave of memory, the storm of desire, the fire of emotion pass through without affecting your equanimity.”Sri Sathya Sai Baba

“The best and safest thing is to keep a balance in your life, acknowledge the great powers around us and in us. If you can do that, and live that way, you are really a wise man.” – Euripedes

“Be aware of wonder. Live a balanced life – learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.” ~ Robert Fulghum

“Take the time it takes so it takes less time” ~ Unknown

“Trust your hunches. They’re usually based on facts filed away just below the conscious level.” ~ Joyce Brothers

A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for.” ~ William Shedd

Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.” ~Albert Einstein

“They can because they think they can.” ~ Virgil

Happiness depends more on the inward disposition of mind than on outward circumstances.” ~ Benjamin Franklin

“Do not wait for your ship to come in. Swim out to it.” ~ Unknown

Accept challenges so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory.” ~ George S. Patton

Life is ten percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you respond to it.” ~ Lou Holtz

Whatever the mind can conceive and believe the mind can achieve.” ~ Napoleon Hill

The foundation stones for a balanced success are honesty, character, integrity, faith, love and loyalty. - Zig Ziglar

In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity. – Albert Einstein

The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart. –Albert Camus

Yours in balance and in-balance, stability in stillness and movement,

Home - just in time for the holidays...

Dear Lovies,

The last of the U.S. troops from Iraq came home Wednesday Dec. 14th , a symbolic end to the second longest war in American history.

Lasting more than eight years, the deeply unpopular war has cost the lives of more than 4,400 U.S. soldiers and another 32,000 wounded.

Many people will be traveling home for the holidays and there's no place like home during this time.

There's yoga in that.

Home is anywhere you feel present and loved. Find home in your breath and on your mat and you'll be home.

Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do... but how much love we put in that action. Mother Teresa

The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned. Maya Angelou
