Earth

Darlings,
In Lady Yoga fashion, it is my goal to look back in history to see where we have come from, find the yoga in the moments past to keep us rooted in the present and passionate about where we are going in the future.
History is always happening! Today is Easter, April 24th. Yesterday the 23rd was the traditional birthday of William Shakespeare. Friday the 22nd was the 31st anniversary of Earth Day and on the 27th, according to German mathematician and astronomer, Johannes Kepler, the founder of modern science, he claims it was the birth of the universe in 4977 BC!!
In honor of the three, in the bloom of full springtime, we celebrate rebirth and awareness as our collective intention.

Rome, Roam...

Darlings,

In Lady Yoga fashion, it is my goal to look back in history to see where we have come from, find the yoga in the moments past to keep us rooted in the present and passionate about where we are going in the future.

Rome wasn’t built in a day. In fact, it’s origin is shrouded in myth and legend. From ancient Greece to twin brothers Romulus and Remus, the truth remains that the city has stood since ancient times and is still one of the most revered, visited, religious and beautiful. In honor of the founding of Rome on April 21st in 753 B.C., let’s explore the idea of Roaming, exploring our truth through our bodies, allowing ourselves the ability to let go of any holding or tension and embracing the freedom, being pioneers of our practices and purpose in doing yoga.

Coo, coo, ca-choo, Mr. Robinson

Darlings,

In Lady Yoga fashion, it is my goal to look back in history to see where we have come from, find the yoga in the moments past to keep us rooted in the present and passionate about where we are going in the future.

On that note...

On April 15th of 1947, Jackie Robinson, age 28 become the first African-American player in Major League Baseball. He was a star infielder and outfielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers and broke the color barrier in a sport that had been segregated for more than 50 years. His integrity, skill, talent and will was what got him recruited and Robinson played on the National League All-Star team from 1949 through 1954, leading the Dodgers to six National League pennants and one World Series, in 1955. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. After retiring from baseball in 1957, Robinson became a businessman and civil rights activist. He died October 24, 1972, at age 53, in Stamford, Connecticut.

Today, we think about Jackie Robinson as a leader, expert and inspiration in his field. Back then, we thought of him as an African-American who pioneered and blazed a path. He was both, true, but what stays with us most is his potential achieved in possibility and greatness, not his race.

Back just 10 years ago, I couldn’t imagine getting up into crow pose. It’s a little thing, perhaps, but eventually, I did it and was able to achieve more postures with each practice. Now I teach you to do the same. Yoga is about the postures and I’m no Jackie Robinson but, it is within that potential and possibility that inspires me to keep going in my physical practice and achieve the little steps to greatness I feel each time I share yoga with others when I teach and each time I can conquer a pose as a student.

Each day I teach and each time I am able to master my mental and emotional practice, ah, hem, like meditation and living yoga not just ‘doing’ yoga on a mat, I feel like I’m hitting a home run. It's my passion and inspiration.

Let’s use the inspiration from the great athlete, Jackie Robinson to realize our potential in possibility and limitlessness in our goals on and off the mat.

Civil War

Darlings,

In Lady Yoga fashion, it is my goal to look back in history to see where we have come from, find the yoga in the moments past to keep us rooted in the present and passionate about where we are going in the future.

On April 12th, 1861 our country engaged in Civil War. There was nothing civil about it. North vs. South spurred on by Lincoln’s election and made worse with the issue of slavery clearly divided us as a union - the separation in ideas on how to govern a land. There is nothing to make up for lives lost. Sometimes agreeing to disagree is the best way to find union and get along. Idealistic? Perhaps.

Someone asked me, how can you find yoga in war? It’s easy. When you are in it, you can’t see that in the end, there is always what we wanted in the beginning, kindness, mercy, compassion, surrender and finally, contemplation on how to do better next time.

Whether it’s a war between sides, countries or within ourselves, our collective intention is to practice with the presence of what already is – before, after and what lies within each battle: Mercy, Compassion, surrender, kindness and contemplation.

But the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart. - Antoine de saint-exupéry All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope. -Winston Churchill

Compassion is a call, a demand of nature, to relieve the unhappy as hunger is a natural call for food. - Joseph Butler

Unconditional Love....

Darlings,

In Lady Yoga fashion, it is my goal to look back in history to see where we have come from, find the yoga in the moments past to keep us rooted in the present and passionate about where we are going in the future.

On that note...

Our collective intention today is to celebrate the idea of unconditional love. Many of this feel this in the love of another or the love of the passion or the purpose we have in life. But is it so very obvious and evident in the love given from an animal. The words they can’t speak we can see in the quiet love and nurturing back unconditionally towards us. It’s the same nurturing we feel when we practice yoga, if we chose to accept it. It might not look as cute and fluffy as a puppy, but our practice is there to give back to us unconditionally and fuel that love forward. Today, we honor the anniversary of the founding of the ASPCA-the prevention of cruelty to animals back on this day April 10, back in 1866. The Society spurred on many humane movements from pets to people for over a century, engaging in the reminder and awareness of all living things and that love is all you need…unconditionally.

On April 10, 1866, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is founded in New York City by 54 year old philanthropist and diplomat Henry Bergh.

Nine days later, the first effective anti-cruelty law in the United States was passed, allowing the ASPCA to investigate complaints of animal cruelty and to make arrests.

From slaughter houses to house pets, he worked with police, schools etc. to educate and eradicate abuse. As the pioneer and innovator of the humane movement, the ASPCA quickly became the model for more than 25 other humane organizations in the United States and Canada. And by the time Bergh died in 1888, 37 of the 38 states in the Union had passed anti-cruelty laws.

Bergh’s dramatic street rescues of mistreated horses and livestock served as a model for those trying to protect abused children.

Mercy to animals means mercy to mankind. Henry Bergh
